End of Journey

I am posting this from the Windhoek Airport, as I await a flight home to Toronto. My Mother’s life journey ended this morning, and I must end this one too. For the record, my Mother loved Africa, and passed on her love of this continent to me, and she was my biggest fan. Once African, always African…it part of our blood and bones. So Mum, I did this ride for you and because of you…I leave your spirit on this Continent.
When I am together again, I will post a few pictures from Botswana. Thank you to the many, many people that supported me on this tremendous ride. I will never forget you.

Condolences on the loss of your Mom. I just went through your blog in full after hearing the news this morning. I had been waiting to read the whole blog in one go like an anticipated new book or movie series! But today I decided to read it in honor of your Mom! I also knew that the path of your African journey had changed and was now detoured back to your 2nd home Toronto to be with your family as you say Bon voyage to your Mom.
We were lucky to see her one last time on Saturday and she knew we were there as she held out her hands, smiled and tried to speak to Joe, Nicholas and myself! Mom spent a couple of hours with her and your Dad that afternoon. When we left her room she managed a very audible and definite “goodbye”. I know how proud both of your parents are of this epic “safari” of yours.
It was lovely to read your blog and the good, the bad, the ugly and sad! Thank you for sharing!
Our thoughts are with you on this last leg of your journey home through various airports and flights!
Although it is bittersweet, welcome home- kuwakaribisha nyumbani!

    Gizele,

I’ve enjoyed all your blog postings as they’ve been so colourful and beautifully written… but your last one was the most poignant — a truly moving tribute to your mum. I know you will stay strong and one day continue the great adventure. She’ll certainly want you to.

    Gizele,
Deepest sympathies to you and your extended family, your mom’s friends, all of those important in her life……I with your other bike friends are thinking of you and mourning with you. May the love of friends and family help you get through this journey. You are strong and experienced with going through the hard times, the bad weather, that then allows you to rejoice in the beauty. I’m sure that will serve you well. I am so sorry. May we all remember to kiss each day.

Dearest Gizele – I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Mackie and I will miss her on Thursdays. She was always such a positive person and was so proud of you. She tried so hard to hang on so you wouldn’t have to shorten this amazing journey you were on. Her heart and spirit were with you all the way. Mackie and I tried to see her yesterday but we were too late. My heart goes out to you and your family. Have a safe flight home. May she rest in peace. Vicky
